Are You Living Your Values? How Value-Based Actions Create a Meaningful Life

Values and Their Role

Values guide decisions, actions, and priorities. They shape who we are and provide a sense of direction in life. Value examples could be honesty, kindness, courage, reliability, faith, and contribution, or anything you hold dear or is the “ends you are after.”

Living by our values brings a sense of purpose, stability, and fulfillment that strengthens our mental well-being and satisfaction in life. When we act in alignment with our values:

We Feel More Authentic and Self-Confident

Inner conflict lessens because we are true to ourselves and the values we hold dear.

Here is how that might look:

Michael always valued family, but his demanding job often pulled him away from his wife and kids. He told himself that working long hours was necessary to provide for them, but deep down, he felt a growing sense of guilt. One evening, his daughter asked, “Dad, why are you always on your laptop? Don’t you want to play with me?” That simple question hit him hard.

Michael realized that while his career was important, his family was his top priority. He set new boundaries, turning off his phone during dinner, leaving work at a reasonable time, and making weekends family time. At first, it was difficult to step away from his responsibilities at work, but as he started living in alignment with his values, he felt more at peace. His relationships grew stronger, and he no longer felt the nagging inner conflict that had been weighing him down.

This statement “His values dictated it” expresses how values work like an internal compass.

We Experience Greater Resilience

During difficult times, values help us stay grounded and make meaningful choices instead of reacting impulsively.

Here is how it might look:

Emily always valued perseverance. As a young athlete, she dreamed of making the varsity basketball team, but during tryouts, she struggled to keep up with more experienced players. When the final roster was posted, her name wasn’t on it. She felt crushed, and tempted to give up, but she reminded herself that perseverance meant pushing forward, even when things got tough.

Instead of quitting, Emily dedicated the next year to improving her skills. She woke up early to practice, watched game footage to learn strategies, and sought advice from her coach. When tryouts came around again, she gave them everything she had. This time, she made the team.

Looking back, Emily realized that failure didn’t define her—her response did. Because she held onto her value of perseverance, she not only achieved her goal but also became stronger and more resilient in the process.

As the saying goes, ‘Her values dictated it.’ When we stay true to what we believe in, we find the strength to keep going, even when the road is difficult.

We Build Stronger Relationships

Shared values foster trust and deeper connections with others.

Here’s how that might look:

Maya and her best friend, Anna, both valued honesty. They made a pact early in their friendship to always be truthful with each other, even when it was challenging. One day, Anna overheard people spreading a false rumor about Maya. Instead of ignoring it or sugarcoating the situation, she told Maya the truth.

At first, Maya was upset, but she quickly realized that Anna’s honesty came from a place of love. They worked together to clear up the misunderstanding, and Maya appreciated that Anna had the courage to be upfront. Their friendship grew even stronger because it was built on trust.

As the saying goes, “Their values dictated it.” When we share and uphold the same values in our relationships, we create bonds that withstand life’s challenges.

We Reduce Stress and Anxiety

When decisions align with our values, we feel more at peace rather than confused or regretful.

Here’s how that might look:

Ethan had been offered a high-paying job at a prestigious company, but there was a catch—the job required bending ethical rules to close deals. Deep down, Ethan valued integrity and fairness.

For days, he wrestled with the decision. The salary was tempting, but every time he imagined taking the job, he felt uneasy. In the end, he turned it down, choosing to work for a company that aligned with his values, even if it meant earning less.

Months later, Ethan had no regrets. He slept better at night, knowing he had stayed true to himself and his values.

“His values dictated it.” When we live according to what truly matters, we experience inner peace rather than stress and regret.

Consequences of Ignoring Values

When we act against our values, we often experience guilt or worse—shame, stress, and a sense of disconnection from ourselves.

Here’s how that might look:

Sophia always believed in standing up for others, but one day at work, she witnessed a colleague being treated unfairly by a supervisor. She wanted to speak up, but fear held her back—what if she got in trouble? She stayed silent, convincing herself it wasn’t her place to intervene.

That night, she couldn’t shake the guilt. She felt like she had betrayed not only her coworker but also herself. Over time, the weight of that decision made her question who she was.

Eventually, Sophia promised herself that she would never stay silent again. The regret taught her a valuable lesson: ignoring her values caused more distress than the fear of speaking up ever could.

As the saying goes, “Her values dictated it.” When we ignore what we believe in, we lose trust in ourselves, but when we realign with our values, we reclaim our confidence and integrity.

Conclusion

Reflecting on your top values can help you recognize them as a mental health compass, guiding you toward a life of integrity and meaning. When you align your choices with your values, you empower yourself to take actions that keep you true to who you are.

But we cannot do this if we do not clearly know what our values are!
