What Does Healthy Coping Look Like?

by | Feb 27, 2025 | 0 comments

Coping aims to reduce and/or alleviate the distress that comes from challenging life circumstances, relationships, and lifestyles. However, many coping styles can be used to bring relief from the stressors that come from these life domains that are bogging you down.

Some coping styles offer helpful strategies, and some styles like avoidance do not. Understanding the various ways of how to alter or manage a stressor effectively is essential to avoiding the unhealthy trap of temporary relief, which can ultimately create bigger problems in the long run.

Four Healthy Coping Strategies

Four healthy coping strategies that can provide more lasting relief are found in these categories:

Emotional-Focused Coping Skills

Emotional-focused coping skills are strategic methods used to change or manage how you feel, so you are not as emotionally reactive. Therefore, it is a behavioral and cognitive approach.

Activities might include comforting distractions—from overwhelming emotions such as anger, anxiety, fear, or sadness—involving hobbies you enjoy, such as exercising, dancing, listening to music, or focusing on a task.

Expressing your thoughts and feelings about intense emotions through journaling, art, or conversations with a trusted friend can provide a fresh perspective on situations. This, in turn, allows you to reframe the experience, in a positive light and recognize the benefits one is gaining.

Cognitively changing one’s mood can be done through breathing, meditation, or progressive muscle relaxation.

Problem-Focused or Solution-Focused Coping Skills

Problem-focused or Solution-focused coping skills are strategic methods used to alter the situation or eliminate stressors with a plan of action.

They might define the problem you are facing more clearly. Focusing on what is going right more than what is going wrong helps one to see options available to solve issues.

Breaking challenges into manageable steps helps one commit to an action plan. Time management is vital for elevating feelings of overwhelm and stress.

Assertive communication can also help effectively address concerns. Seeking advice and support from experts, mentors, and trusted individuals can help tackle challenges with insight.

Meaning-Focused Coping Skills

Meaning-focused coping skills are strategic methods where values and beliefs give life meaning as you tolerate your distress and bring personal growth.

One way to implement this approach is to spend time identifying lessons or personal strengths that have been gained from difficult lived experiences.

Reframing adversity into an opportunity for growth and resilience adds merit.

Set goals that align with personal values and foster a sense of purpose and contribution to those around you.

Engaging in writing processes such as storytelling can also bring a broader view of different points of view that enhance understanding which invites learning.

Spiritual/Religious-Focused Coping Skills

Spiritual/Religious-focused coping skills are strategic methods used to bring comfort and spiritual strength to distress that comes from unexpected distress.

Relying on a connection with a higher source through prayer, scripture study and rituals helps bring reassurance that adversity can be turned into some sort of gain in the long run.

Practicing gratitude as well as forgiveness enhances overall well-being. Reflection on spiritual teachings that promote peace, acceptance, and hope one can feel with spiritual implementations.

Support from spiritual leaders and faith communities can bring internal soothing and relief.

Each coping style can be used individually or in a variety of many styles, depending on the situation and personal preferences.

Unhealthy Coping Skills

Unhealthy Coping Skills can be used as a method to avoid or numb emotional pain such tactics are:

Avoidance

Healthy coping mechanisms can become counterproductive if they are used to escape the real issue. For example, if financial worries are causing stress, you might distract yourself somehow so you are not creating a budget, but this avoidance will not fix your financial stress.

While distraction activities may temporarily reduce anxiety, avoiding the root problem only delays necessary solutions. Or, having that hard conversation that gets procrastinated because the outcome is too hard to predict. This type of avoidance will not resolve the relational conflict. In fact, it might create more resentment which creates more distance.

Substance Use (Drugs and Alcohol)

Substances are used to numb pain, but this temporary relief generally introduces new problems instead of resolving them. Alcohol acts as a depressant in the body, potentially worsening negative emotions because it disrupts neurotransmitters that affect thoughts and feelings.

Relying on drugs or alcohol to cope also increases the risk of developing a substance use disorder and can result in health and social complications.

Excessive Sleep

Taking a nap to escape stress or oversleeping to avoid facing daily challenges can serve as a short-term refuge. Once awake, however, the underlying problem remains unresolved.

Compulsive Spending

‘Retail therapy’ may provide a momentary mood boost, but excessive shopping can become problematic. Accumulating too many possessions can also contribute to stress. Overspending beyond your means can create financial difficulties that add to your burdens.

Conclusion

Coping helps reduce distress from life’s challenges, relationships, and daily pressures—provided the strategies are healthy and effective. Pay attention to your own coping methods and assess whether they are truly helping you constructively manage the stress in your life or if you need to make adjustments in your coping styles.
